Hello

My name is Isabella Lenz, and welcome to my portfolio! I specialize in print, digital, and social media design as well as photography, and my ultimate goal is to be a graphic designer for a professional sports team. Through my most recent role as an Athletic Communications Assistant for Michigan Tech Athletics, I gained experience in visual storytelling, cross-departmental communication, working within a brand guide, and logo, typographic, and layout design. With these acquired skills, I aim to tell the story of the high emotions and feelings that fans and players experience during competition.

In addition, I recently graduated from Michigan Technological University with a BA in Scientific & Technical Communication. I also earned minors in Digital Media and Psychology, and ended my time as a husky with a 4.0 GPA.

My Story

It might be odd to hear, but my sport (not my academic interests) entirely dictated where I went to college–and yes, you read that right. When I first committed to Michigan Tech University (MTU), I was more focused on whether the basketball part was a good fit instead of ensuring that the degree I chose would lead to the career path I wanted to follow. For a better explanation, I wasn’t entirely focused on what my future (career) would look like because this was the future I had been working toward for so many years. I was fully engulfed in enjoying the gifts of the present by spending many hours each week practicing, weightlifting, and conditioning at the gym. Despite spending much of my time at the gym, I managed to simultaneously study and maintain good grades because, after all, I was a student-athlete. Balancing academics and athletics was crucial, as being a student-athlete meant excelling in both arenas. As I got further into my academic career, I had to face reality. Worry started to set in as I wondered whether I could reach my dream career (of being a graphic designer for a professional sports team) with a degree in Scientific & Technical communication–and not graphic design (since it wasn’t offered at MTU). I realized I needed more hands-on experience to build my portfolio and grow in my craft. When I finally landed the position as an Athletic Communications Assistant in my third year, I began to feel more comfortable with the thought of

reaching my career goals. At times, basketball made my journey more difficult, but it also taught me many valuable lessons and helped me become a better version of myself. From learning to manage conflict within a team to gaining new perspectives on the importance of time management and organizational skills, my time on the team was an enormously important and developmental part of my college experience. Looking back, basketball has shaped me into a resilient, emotionally intelligent, and team-oriented leader, and I know that the drive and discipline I’ve accrued from being a student-athlete will help me continue to grow both personally and professionally. As I look to the future, I’m excited to channel my experience and skills into creating impactful designs that capture the essence of sports and competition.
